For the women of Just A Numb3r, life is still center stage. If after reading this article YOU wished Erie County had a dance team like this, Serving Our Seniors wants you to take the advice of 84 year old, Rini Gaunter who said... “Start one yourself.” For more information call Serving Our Seniors 419-624-1856. Ask for Sue Daugherty, Director. Serving Our Seniors funds the Erie County Senior Center to deliver meals to the rural areas of Erie County. Below is a story of a volunteer and a hero. Charlene Cullen signed up to volunteer for the Erie County Senior Center delivering meals after reading an advertisement in the newspaper. She has been a volunteer for five years. She cherishes her memories with those she delivers to each week. “It’s never just about delivering a meal- it’s about delivering a connection.” Charlene says, “I always believed serving others is where the heart feels most full”. She continued, “I look forward to their smiling faces when I get to the door”. Charlene is right. Her gift accomplishes so much more than delivering a meal. She has been a hero on more than one occasion. One day, an older adult on Charlene’s route did not answer the door. “This gentleman always answers,” Charlene stated. She drove half a mile before having the gut feeling to turn around. Charlene walked around his house and peered through the window, seeing that he had not been out of bed. Worried, she called local authorities who discovered that the gentleman’s health was compromised due to being in bed for two days and dehydrated. Charlene stated, “Because someone showed up and looked twice, he got the help he needed.” The Power of Intuition and a Rural Home Delivered Meal Volunteer By India Gray This illustrates why the volunteers are so important to people of older age. By volunteering to deliver Rural Home Delivered Meals, you are not just filling hours in your schedule — you are filling a critical gap in someone’s life. Your simple act of service can prevent isolation, detect emergencies, and provide comfort to neighbors who once helped build the very communities we now enjoy. If you are looking for a meaningful way to give back, this is your opportunity to make a real and immediate difference in the life of another.
