A urinary catheter tube scam from a company called Centennial Medical Supply is sweeping the nation. The company, located in Denver, Colorado, fraudulently bills insurance companies to receive payments for medical supplies, which the Medicare consumer does not need. Ohio resident, Johanna, noticed a $2,250 claim for urinary catheter on her secondary insurance review. She had not heard of the company Centennial Medical Supply and did not know why the claim had been made. Johanna immediately reported the faulty charge to Medicare and her secondary insurance. After calling, she had discovered that Medicare had paid the first month’s claim. After a few months, Johanna reviewed her insurance claims and found that Medicare had paid multiple charges from Centennial Medical Supply. Frustrated, she contacted Medicare again, asking why they had not addressed the issue. Johanna was told that Medicare did not have a way to flag a suspicious company after it had been reported. MEDICARE SCAMS: It Pays To Be Informed By India Gray Taking matters into her own hands, Johanna decided to search the internet for the company. Johanna discovered about 25 reviews that described similar scenarios. She reported the company to both of her insurances again and contacted the Office of the Inspector General (OIG). The OIG is pursing charges for possible prosecution. Johanna recently attended Serving Our Seniors forum, entitled “The Anatomy of a Medicare Scam” . Jodie Rogers, Outreach Specialist, Senior Medicare Patrol explained she should apply for a new Medicare number. “I didn’t even know I could get a new Medicare number because it wasn’t offered by Medicare,” Johanna said. With the help of the Ohio Senior Medicare Patrol she received a new Medicare number. Johanna urges readers to check the dates and services on their insurance claims. “Verify all of the information and don’t be afraid to ask for help”. Johanna’s final piece of advice is this… Do not to answer unknown phone numbers or click links in emails.
