Erie County is changing in a way we can no longer ignore: we are an older community. This shift is already here, and it will shape every aspect of our future—from healthcare and housing to transportation and other human services. The declining birthrate of 1.7 it means diminishing family support for future generations of older residents. In 2024, Erie County reached a significant milestone: there are now more residents age 60 and older than children from infancy through age 17. Over the next 25 years, the proportion of older adults will remain large (31% in 2030 to 27% in 2050). By 2050, many of today’s working-age residents will be entering later life. At the same time, people who are 60, today, may live another 25 years or more. This means a longer life, but also a longer period during which financial support, geriatric social services, and community connection will be needed. Serving Our Seniors plays a vital role helping older adults from being dismissed and disregarded. We serve as their advocate to get the help they need and can afford. Serving Our Seniors has established the Fund for the Future, an endowed fund managed by the Erie County Community Foundation. A gift to this fund is more than a donation—it is an investment. An investment to ensure when today’s young and middle-aged adults reach later life, Serving Our Seniors will be here to help with resolve problems that older adults cannot overcome, alone.
